A luxury rental in Costa Rica is not simply a large house with a pool. At its best, it is a private estate with a team that cooks, cleans and quietly anticipates what you need, set in a landscape of ocean, jungle or volcano views. At its worst, it is a beautiful photograph attached to a house with a rough access road, no air conditioning and a chef who is “available on request.” The difference lies in the details, and most of those details never appear in a listing headline. This guide explains how to read a luxury rental like an insider, so you can choose a villa that delivers the stay you imagined.
What a luxury rental should include
The baseline for a true luxury villa is a private pool, air-conditioned bedrooms, reliable Wi-Fi, daily housekeeping and a fully equipped kitchen. Above that baseline, the services diverge. Some villas include a cook for breakfast, others a full team with a chef, a butler-style house manager, a night guard and a driver on call. Many do not include everything, and that is perfectly fine, as long as you know in advance what you are paying for.
Ask the owner or the team to list services in plain language: how many staff members, what hours they work, which meals are included, and what is billed separately. Our guide to staffed villas explains which services are usually part of the rental and which are extras.
Understand the real cost of a rental
The nightly rate is only the beginning. A realistic budget includes the rental rate, a cleaning fee, taxes, and any services you add, such as a private chef, groceries, transfers and activities. In the holiday weeks, rates are higher and minimum stays apply, often seven nights or more. Groceries and chef fees are typically billed on top of the villa rate.
On our private villas, each property shows a starting rate and a note on high-season pricing, so you can see the range before you ask for a quote. Always request a written summary of the total cost, including taxes and all fees, before you commit.
Compare regions before you compare houses
Region matters more than any amenity. Guanacaste has the sunniest, driest weather and the most polished beach infrastructure, with villas close to restaurants, golf and marinas. The central Pacific coast around Manuel Antonio and the southern Pacific around Dominical offer hillside villas with sweeping ocean views and rainforest at the door. Arenal brings volcano views and hot springs, usually in a quieter setting.
Read where to stay in Costa Rica for the full comparison, or Guanacaste or Manuel Antonio if you are weighing the two most popular choices.
Check the practical details that photos hide
- Access: ask about the road, especially in hillside areas. A 4×4 may be needed in the green season.
- Distance to the beach and to town: a villa “near the beach” can mean a ten-minute drive.
- Cooling: confirm air conditioning in every bedroom, not just the main suite.
- Safety: ask about pool fencing, railings on terraces and night security.
- Capacity: check the number of beds and bathrooms, not just the maximum guest count.
- Noise and neighbors: some communities restrict amplified music.
Choose the right size and layout
A couple may be happiest in a two-bedroom villa with a plunge pool and a private terrace. A family of six needs separate wings or a casita for privacy. For a group of friends or a multigenerational trip, look for large shared living areas and bedrooms of similar quality, so no one feels they drew the short straw. Villa or resort?
If you want privacy, space and a flexible schedule, a villa is hard to beat. If you prefer on-site restaurants, spas and kids’ clubs without any organization, a resort may suit you better. Many travelers combine both, with a few nights in a resort and a week in a villa. See our villa, resort or lodge guide for an honest comparison, or browse our luxury resorts.
Ask the right questions before you book
- What is the minimum stay for my dates, and what is the holiday rate?
- Who is on the staff, and what hours do they work?
- Is a private chef included or arranged separately, and how are groceries billed?
- What is the cancellation policy, and what deposit is required?
- Is there a backup plan for power or water interruptions?
- Are there any restrictions on guests, events or pets?

Frequently asked questions
How much does a luxury rental in Costa Rica cost?
Rates vary widely by region, size, season and services. The best approach is to compare the starting rate, the high-season rate and the extras such as cleaning, taxes, a chef and groceries.
Is a chef included in a Costa Rica luxury rental?
Sometimes. Many villas arrange a chef for an additional fee, with groceries billed separately. Confirm what is included before you book.
What is the best region for a luxury villa?
It depends on the mood you want: Guanacaste for sun and beaches, Manuel Antonio and Dominical for ocean views and wildlife, Arenal for volcano views and hot springs.
How far ahead should I book a luxury rental?
For December to April, as early as possible. The best villas fill months ahead, especially for Christmas, New Year and Easter.
