Holiday Rates and Minimum Stays in Costa Rica: What to Expect at Christmas and New Year

Every year, the same surprise catches travelers planning a Christmas or New Year trip to Costa Rica: the nightly rate they saw in October is not the rate they are quoted for late December, and the villa they like turns out to require a seven-night minimum. None of this is unusual. It is simply how the high season works in a country where the best properties are small, the demand is concentrated into a few weeks, and the owners or hotel teams plan their year around them. Understanding the mechanics in advance helps you budget accurately, compare offers fairly and avoid last-minute disappointment.

Why holiday periods are priced differently

Costa Rica’s dry season runs from roughly December to April, and the holiday weeks sit at its peak. Families travel, groups gather, and international guests arrive for sun after the northern winter. Because the supply of top villas and resorts is limited, owners and hotels apply holiday rates and, often, minimum stays to the weeks that matter most.

The “holiday period” is not a single date range. It usually covers Christmas week and New Year week, sometimes extending from around December 20 to January 5. Some properties also apply special rates for Easter week, Presidents’ week in February and other peak weekends. Always ask for the exact start and end dates of the holiday rate rather than assuming.

How minimum stays work

A minimum stay is the shortest booking the owner will accept for a given period. For a villa, a typical pattern is a shorter minimum in the green season, a longer one in the dry season, and the longest at Christmas and New Year. Seven nights is common for the holidays, and some villas ask for more. Resorts also use minimums on peak dates, particularly across the New Year weekend.

If your plans are flexible, ask whether the minimum applies to the whole holiday period or only to specific dates. Sometimes shifting your arrival by a day can open up options. Also ask whether the same minimum applies to a stay that begins before the holiday period and extends into it.

What the quoted rate usually includes

When you compare two offers, check that they cover the same things. A villa quote may include housekeeping but not a chef, or a base rate that excludes cleaning and taxes. A resort quote may be room-only or include breakfast or all meals. Use a simple checklist:

  • Nightly or weekly rate, and the dates it applies to.
  • Cleaning fee and taxes.
  • Staff included: housekeeping, cook, security, concierge.
  • Groceries and chef fees, if applicable.
  • Transfers, activities and any holiday dinner supplements.
  • Deposit, payment schedule and cancellation terms.

Holiday supplements and special dinners

Some villas and resorts add a supplement for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or New Year’s Eve, to cover staff working on those nights or a festive menu. This is normal and reasonable, but it should be disclosed in advance. Deposits, payment schedules and cancellation

For holiday dates, expect a larger deposit and a firmer cancellation policy than in the green season. Typical structures include an initial deposit to hold the dates, a second payment some weeks before arrival and a final balance before check-in, but every owner sets their own terms. Ask in writing for the payment schedule and the cancellation grid, including what happens if you need to change dates. Travel insurance is worth considering for peak periods, and you should read the policy’s terms carefully.

How to approach your request

  • Send your dates, group size and preferred atmosphere early.
  • Ask for the total cost, including all fees and taxes.
  • Request the minimum stay for your exact dates.
  • Confirm what is included in the staff and in the rate.
  • Ask about availability for a chef on December 24, 25 and 31.
  • Keep your dates flexible by a day or two if possible.
