Best Time to Visit Guanacaste: Month by Month

Guanacaste is the sunniest and driest region of Costa Rica, and it is the part of the country where a beach vacation is easiest to plan. Even so, “the best time to go” depends on what you value: guaranteed sunshine, quieter beaches, lower rates, green landscapes, calm seas or festive holidays. The year divides into two main seasons, with a few important variations inside them. This month-by-month guide explains what each period feels like, so you can choose your dates with confidence.

The big picture: dry season and green season

The dry season runs from roughly December to April. Skies are clear, rain is rare, and the landscape turns golden. This is high season, with the highest rates and the busiest weeks around Christmas, New Year and Easter. The green season runs from about May to November. It brings afternoon or evening showers, a lush green landscape and fewer visitors, with the wettest period usually in September and October.

Most of Guanacaste’s rainfall comes in short bursts, often late in the day, leaving mornings sunny. That is why many travelers find the green season more pleasant than its name suggests.

December to February: sun, breeze and peak demand

December through February are the classic months for a Guanacaste vacation. Days are sunny, nights are comfortable, and the beaches are at their best. Winds can pick up on the northern coast, particularly in the Papagayo area, which keeps the heat gentle but can make the sea choppier on certain days. Because this is the peak period, the best villas and resorts book early, and the weeks from about December 20 to January 5 usually require minimum stays and holiday rates.

If your dates are flexible, early December and late January are often calmer than the holiday weeks. See our Costa Rica in December guide for planning that month in detail.

March and April: the hottest, driest months

By March and April, the heat builds and the land is at its driest. Beaches are quiet in the early morning and busy at midday, and the sea is typically calm. These months are excellent for water activities and for guests who love warm weather. Easter week, known locally as Semana Santa, is one of the busiest periods of the year, as Costa Rican families travel to the beach. Book early and expect higher demand on roads and restaurants.

May and June: the green season begins

The first rains arrive in May, and the landscape quickly turns green. Mornings are usually sunny, with showers building in the afternoon. Rates are lower, crowds thin out and the countryside is vivid. This is a good time for travelers who want a relaxed, nature-focused stay and are comfortable adapting plans around the weather.

July and August: the little summer and the middle of the green season

In July, a short drier spell known as the “veranillo,” or little summer, often appears, bringing more sunshine between showers. August returns to a more regular rainy pattern. For travelers with children on school vacations, these months can be appealing: the beaches are calm, the weather is warm and the rates are lower than in the high season. Confirm conditions for the specific beach you plan to visit.

September and October: the quietest weeks

September and October are usually the wettest months across much of the country. Some businesses close for a short break, roads can be affected by heavy rain, and some activities may be limited. For guests who value solitude and a deep green landscape, it can still be a rewarding time, but flexibility is important. A villa with staff, air conditioning and covered terraces makes rainy days comfortable.

November: the transition

By November, rains ease and the landscape remains lush. The high season begins to build toward December, and availability narrows for the holiday weeks. It is a strong month for travelers who want green scenery and good weather with fewer visitors than in December.
