There is no wrong month to visit Costa Rica. There is only the month that suits the trip you want to take. The country’s weather is not a switch that flips from sun to rain. It is a conversation between coasts, mountains and altitude — and it can change the colour of a landscape, the ease of a road and the mood of a villa terrace.
Some travellers dream of sunlit Pacific mornings, dry roads and a pool that never needs an excuse. Others would rather find the country at its most green: rain on the leaves after lunch, fewer people at the beach, waterfalls at full voice and long, cinematic skies. Both can be extraordinary. The important thing is to choose deliberately.
First, forget the idea of a single Costa Rica season
The Pacific, the central mountains and the Caribbean do not live by exactly the same calendar. On much of the Pacific coast, the drier months tend to bring bright days and easier beach-going weather. During the greener months, mornings can still be luminous before afternoon rain cools the air and deepens the jungle. The Caribbean, meanwhile, should be considered on its own terms rather than treated as an extension of the Pacific forecast.

For the bright, effortless Pacific: the drier months
From around December through April, Guanacaste often delivers the Costa Rica many people picture first: golden grass in the hills, wide blue horizons and long evenings that begin beside the water. In Tamarindo or Papagayo, this is the season for beach days that require little planning and for villas where breakfast runs naturally into an afternoon by the pool.
This is also the period many travellers choose, particularly over festive dates and school holidays. The advice is simple: do not wait for a better villa to appear. The most desirable homes and suites are often the ones with the right combination of view, bedrooms and easy access.
For the Costa Rica that feels most alive: the green season
From roughly May to November, the country changes its palette. Hillsides soften into deep green, the air is richer and the ocean can feel more theatrical. Rain is part of the experience, but it does not erase the day. In many regions, mornings remain the time for beaches, walks and wildlife, while afternoons invite a slower plan: a long lunch, a massage at the villa, a book beneath a covered terrace.
For travellers who value privacy, this can be an especially beautiful period. In Dominical, a hillside villa looks out over rainforest that seems to breathe after the rain. The question is not whether you will see a shower; it is whether you are happy to let the day become softer around it.
For a honeymoon or a special celebration
For a honeymoon, anniversary or family celebration, dates should serve the experience rather than the other way around. If your idea of luxury is certainty around sunny beach days, a Pacific stay in the drier months is reassuring. If it is a private house, candlelit dinners, a chef at home and landscapes that feel cinematic, the green season can create something more intimate.

When should you book?
The right time to book is earlier than most people think. For Christmas, New Year and peak dry-season weeks, the best properties are often chosen well in advance. For green-season stays, a little more flexibility is possible, but it is still worth beginning with the region and villa that truly suit the group.
