7 Days in Costa Rica: A Luxury Itinerary

Seven days is enough to experience the essentials of Costa Rica at a comfortable pace, as long as you resist the urge to do too much. The best one-week itineraries choose two bases and let the days unfold: a few nights by the ocean, a few nights near a volcano, and time to rest in between. This itinerary is built for travelers who value comfort, privacy and good service, and it keeps the driving to a minimum. Treat it as a framework to adapt to your dates and interests.

The idea: two bases, no rush

A week in Costa Rica works best with two stops. We suggest four nights on the Guanacaste coast, for sun and sea, followed by three nights near Arenal, for nature and hot springs. Each base offers enough time to settle in. The transfer between them is about three hours by road, so choose a private driver and leave after breakfast.

If you prefer to stay in one place, a villa in Guanacaste or Manuel Antonio can fill a full week with day trips. Our guide to how many days to spend in Costa Rica helps you decide how many bases to include.

Day 1: arrive in Liberia and settle in

Fly into Liberia (LIR), where a private driver meets you and takes you to your base in Guanacaste. Papagayo is usually 30 to 45 minutes away and Tamarindo about an hour and a half. Spend the first evening at the pool, with a sunset drink and an easy dinner. See our guide to Liberia airport for arrival tips.

Days 2 to 4: the Guanacaste coast

Use these days to enjoy the beach and the sea. A morning on the sand, a long lunch, an afternoon at the pool and a sunset sail make a natural rhythm. For a day out, consider a private boat trip, a snorkeling excursion or a horseback ride. Choose a villa or resort that fits your style: polished in Papagayo, lively in Tamarindo. Day 5: transfer to Arenal

After breakfast, travel to the Arenal area with your private driver, stopping for lunch along the way. Arrive in time for a late afternoon soak in the hot springs and dinner with a view of the volcano. Resorts such as Nayara Springs and The Springs Resort & Spa focus on this landscape. See our La Fortuna page.

Days 6 and 7: rainforest, hot springs and rest

Spend one day on a guided walk in the rainforest, with a visit to a waterfall or hanging bridges, and the other on spa time, a chocolate or coffee tour and a quiet evening. This is where the trip slows down and the landscape does the work. Book your guides early, as the best ones fill quickly.

Day 7 or 8: departure

From Arenal, San José airport (SJO) is about three hours away, so plan a morning departure for an afternoon flight, or add a night near the airport if your flight is early. If you flew into Liberia and out of San José, you saved the backtrack. If your flight leaves from Liberia, add a night in Guanacaste at the end. Check airline schedules and allow generous time.

What to book first

  • Villa or resort for each stop, especially for December to April.
  • Private transfers between the two regions.
  • Guides for the rainforest and for any special excursion.
  • Restaurant or chef dinners for the evenings you care most about.
  • Flights, with attention to the airport pairing.

Adapting the itinerary

If you travel with children, add a family-friendly activity each day and keep drives short. If you are on a honeymoon, spend an extra night in each place and book a private dinner. If you want more wildlife, replace one beach night with a night on the central Pacific coast, near Manuel Antonio. See Costa Rica with kids for family ideas.

Where to spend the extra night if you have one

If you can stretch the week to eight nights, add the extra night to the place where you most want to linger. For many travelers, that is the first base, because the beach stay is where the trip turns from travel into vacation. For others, it is the Arenal stop, where a slower evening with a private dinner and a soak in the hot springs gives the trip its emotional center. Either way, it is better to add a night than to add a new destination.

If you are traveling during the holidays, book the final night near the airport so you have a calm last evening and a relaxed morning. Roads are busier around Christmas and New Year, and the margin of safety is valuable. For more ideas on timing, see when to visit Costa Rica.
