14 Days in Costa Rica: A Luxury Itinerary

Two weeks is the sweet spot for a Costa Rica trip. It is long enough to experience several landscapes without feeling hurried, and short enough to be arranged with careful transfers and a comfortable pace. This itinerary is designed for travelers who want to see the highlights in style: a beach in Guanacaste, a volcano in Arenal, ocean views in Manuel Antonio and the wild beauty of the southern Pacific. It is a template, not a rule. Adapt it to your interests, your dates and the time of year.

The structure: four bases in fourteen nights

A smooth two-week itinerary uses four bases, with three to four nights in each. That gives you time to unpack, relax and enjoy the property, rather than spending the trip in the car. We suggest: four nights in Guanacaste, three in Arenal, four in Manuel Antonio and three in the southern Pacific around Dominical or Uvita. Fly into Liberia and out of San José to avoid backtracking. Our guide to Liberia or San José explains the airport pairing.

Nights 1 to 4: Guanacaste

Begin with sun, sea and rest. Choose a villa or resort in Papagayo or the Gold Coast, and spend your days on the beach, at the pool and on the water. Add a private sail and a long dinner at the villa. See Papagayo and Tamarindo, and read the best time to visit Guanacaste.

Nights 5 to 7: Arenal and La Fortuna

After a morning drive of about three hours, arrive at the volcano region for hot springs, rainforest and spa time. This is a good moment to slow down and to enjoy a quiet property. Read about La Fortuna and the adults-only resorts in Costa Rica.

Nights 8 to 11: Manuel Antonio

From Arenal, travel to the central Pacific coast, a long day, so consider an early start with a private driver or a domestic flight. Settle into a hillside villa with an ocean view, visit the national park with a private guide and take a sunset sail. See Manuel Antonio and our guide to Manuel Antonio luxury villas.

Nights 12 to 14: Dominical or Uvita

Finish in the wild south Pacific, with jungle, whales in season, waterfalls and quiet beaches. Villas with ocean views and a private chef make a perfect final chapter. Read Dominical luxury villas. The drive to San José takes about three to four hours, so plan the departure carefully.

Pacing and logistics

  • Keep each transfer to one morning or one afternoon, never both.
  • Use a private driver on long days and domestic flights where schedules fit.
  • Leave one open day in each base for rest or spontaneity.
  • Confirm check-in and check-out times to avoid dead hours between properties.
  • Book a final night near the airport if your departure flight is early.

What to book first

Start with the properties, particularly for December to April, then transfers, then guides and special dinners. Our guide to getting around Costa Rica explains the choices between drivers, domestic flights and rental cars. For holiday dates, read about holiday rates and minimum stays.

Variations

For a honeymoon, add a night in each base and book private dinners. For a family trip, cut one base and add more time at each. For wildlife, add a night in the Osa Peninsula or the Caribbean coast. For wellness, spend more time near Arenal and add spa days at each stop.

Choosing the season for your two weeks

The dry season, from roughly December to April, is the most reliable time for a multi-region trip, because the roads are in good shape, the beaches are sunny and the mountain landscapes are clearer. It is also the busiest period, so book the properties and transfers early. The green season is a rewarding alternative: the countryside is deeply green, the rates are lower and the crowds are thinner, although afternoon showers are common and some roads require more care.

Whatever season you choose, keep the schedule flexible. A day of heavy rain in the mountains or a delayed flight should not unravel the trip. Building a rest day into each base and keeping the longest drives in the morning gives you the buffer to adapt.
